Mahulu's Legacy

"George Richards - Geordy - is the son-in-law of the late Dr. James Martin who founded the Oxford Martin School in 2005 with the largest benefaction in the university’s 900 year history.
He initially donated 100M usd to found the school then committed to match an additional 50M if the school could find donors to reach that goal. They did so with notable contributions from Bill Gates and George Soros. Dr. Martin was a seminal computer scientist and lecturer who wrote over 100 textbooks covering the entire spectrum of the discipline. (Geordy likes to joke that he invented computer science and everyone else perfected it.)
His first non-technical book - The Wired Society - was nominated for The Pulitzer Prize in 1978 and predicted the rise of the internet and the challenges it would bring. He continued his futurologist insights in a number of books following his retirement from computer science. He also founded his own technology consulting firm which notably developed the first computerized airline booking system and the first card-swiping subway system in Hong Kong.
Dr. James Martin on his island in Bermuda
Dr.Martin passed away in 2013 in the waters off of his island - Agars - in Bermuda. The Oxford Martin School offers 3 year fellowships for post-doctoral researchers working to solve the challenges of the 21st Century using science. It also requires each grant recipient to cross-pollinate their ideas with one another since Dr. Martin believed that the most profound discoveries came from the interplay of ideas ranging from ethics and philosophy to computing. Jim was a polymath who read everything. Geordy remembers asking him how many books he read a week and he estimated 5 books a week on any subject of interest.
Geordy founded Mahulu to honor that legacy by making a sustainable wetsuit in keeping with his keenness for water sports."

Our Mission
Mahulu brings you sustainable ecofoam, eco-friendly neoprene-free wetsuits. Mahulu represents the limitless possibility of a business with an unwavering commitment to people and planet before profit. Our sustainable wetsuits offer the warmth, flexibility, and durability you need to make your never-gonna-forget-it surfing and finally-landed-it surfing moments a reality.
We embrace the challenges of doing ethical business in the twenty-first century. That’s why we think of our eco-friendly wetsuits not as products, but as product cycles. Each step of the product’s life cycle has a positive impact on both people and the planet.
It starts with our ecofoam, made from the byproducts of the seafood industry that we divert from a landfill, which reduces waste and minimizes our carbon footprint. We exclusively use biodegradable and recyclable materials to manufacture ecofoam wetsuits. Our ecofoam wetsuits are priced competitively, so you don’t have to break the bank to make the sustainable choice.
After every purchase, we direct 2% towards restoring coral reefs, all while providing you the highest performance wetsuit possible.
It’s simply not enough to stop destroying the planet. To protect the ocean we play in everyday, we have to start restoring it. This isn’t just “Leave no trace,” this is “Leave it better than you found it.”
